The 2025 Greater Johnstown Auto Expo Recap

First opening its doors on October 22, 1992, the Galleria Mall stood like a monolith overlooking the city with its head in the clouds. Millions of shoppers flocked to the destination, overflowing its parking lots and creating long lines at the checkout. For years, the mall’s prosperity indicated a long, healthy life for the establishment, and stores who managed to gain space inside the mall were well set for financial freedom. The mall was something new, something luxurious; it was paradise.

However, tumultuous times were encountered much sooner than anticipated when the Great Recession stormed over the economy in 2007. Real estate financial managers were hit with some of the largest losses, and, alongside a rising propensity for shoppers to make purchases online, the subsequent decline in commercial real estate property values resulted in sizeable losses that could not be contained. This would leave the Galleria Mall’s fate ping-ponging between changing ownership, management, and a host of other financial woes.

Fast forward to the weekend of March 7th – 9th, 2025. Many malls across the United States have since shuttered their doors, been liquidated, and are set to be demolished, but at the Galleria Mall, you will see it swarming with life as many customers weave in and out of brand-new passenger automobiles on display for the 2nd annual Greater Johnstown Auto Expo. Sixteen different brands under six local dealer groups have wheeled in a small selection of new vehicles for the weekend.

Eventually, the Galleria Mall would be sold at a sheriff’s sale to the US Bank National Association for a measly $238,718, after the-then owner could not continue to make payments on the mortgage. Many residents of Johnstown and tenants of the mall believed this would be the final nail in the coffin, and it would suffer the same fate as so many other shopping malls would. Miraculously, an unknown man by the name of Leo Karruli would purchase the mall at auction with the intent of reviving it and filling its spaces.

Since 2022, the Galleria Mall has seen an influx of new tenants who have been bringing new business to the area. While the dealer groups were driving in their vehicles for the expo, Leo was seen standing at the entryway with his back to the wall, a giant supervising the monolith. For the 2nd time in as many iterations, Spangler Subaru proudly had six new Subaru vehicles on display during the Greater Johnstown Auto Expo. Throughout the weekend, our corner, which was positioned directly in front of JCPenney, was bustling with attendees who were viewing features, climbing into the vehicles, and interacting with our sales personnel.

It was a busy weekend, not just for us, but for the mall, and for the Johnstown community. As we look towards the future, we want to thank everyone who stopped by and continued to support us, the mall, and the local economy. We can only thrive when we support each other.
