Introducing the all-new LOVE Wildflower Garden
At the Conemaugh Gap Gateway Park
We are proud to introduce the all-new LOVE Wildflower Garden, now open to the public. This garden was built by us, with help from our partners, Conemaugh Valley Conservancy and SEADS Garden Center. Beginning in 2024, there will be a three-season wildflower garden in bloom full of many native annual flowers. This means you can enjoy the beauty and pollination of the garden from May until October.
Each letter measures 48 1/2 feet long, and the entirety of the garden stretches 146 feet across the middle of the park. You may find many varieties of wildflowers including corn poppies, cornflowers, sweet alyssum, black-eyed Susans, California poppies, cosmos, and so much more! As we continue to cultivate the land over the coming years, the flowers will help transform the soil, creating a nutrient dense park, and the flowers themselves will grow fuller and cover more area.
Why a Wildflower Garden?
There are over 4,000 native bee species in the United States, as well as a large population of honeybees which were introduced from Europe early when settling in the original colonies. Because of shifts in agricultural development, increased use of pesticides, and growing urban areas, many native wildflower populations have been decreasing in recent years. This means that pollinators, such as bees, are also declining.
Many major food crops require animal pollination, and without the presence of wildflowers these pollinators become less populous and less able to help grow our major food requirements. On top of this, the Johnstown area continues to struggle with an ecosystem badly damaged by mine run-off. This wildflower garden promotes one part of a restoration of our local biodiversity, and will increase the soil quality in an area where a bar previously sat.
We invite you to experience and enjoy this new aspect of our community. It is located in the West End in Johnstown at the newly established Conemaugh Gap Gateway Park.
